Not so much a 'blog' as just a chronologically ordered collection of thoughts as I try to break my social media habits, or at least reduce the harm they do to myself and others.

30 November 2022: low-hanging fruit

One of my goals, in reducing my use of social media, is to wean myself off the dopamine drip of doomscrolling which is a built-in part of the experience on platforms like Facebook or Twitter. In that regard, my first steps are easy because they're also not that impactful. I'm starting by deleting my accounts in two places which I use less as news feeds or even communities, but more as 'social databases': Goodreads, for books, and HowLongToBeat, for games.

While they're certainly not nearly as toxic an influence as Facebook or Twitter, they're also not entirely harmless. Goodreads has been a subsidiary of Amazon since 2013, presumably as a form of customer data collection, while HLTB is owned by digital media empire Ziff Davis. Neither of these are particularly terrible things in isolation, but I mention them because it can be eye-opening just how interconnected the 'web' (forgive the pun) of advertising data-gathering can be.

I know that there are other websites, not currently owned by people wanting to sell me anything, which fulfil a similar purpose. But to be honest, I don't think I want a social media platform for my media consumption. If I feel moved to talk about a particular book or game, I'll do so elsewhere. And until then, I think all I really want is a list.
