I'm more critical of ugly art than I used to be.
Even if you want to be different, that's not an excuse to be ugly.
It's very easy and not very interesting to make something that's different by being ugly, loud, or gross.
I think a lot of people misunderstand some cool things that were different like Space Funeral, even though it's somewhat abrasive I don't consider it ugly.
Also, even if you aren't very good at making art, attempting to make something good and complete is what matters.
Trying your best is very difficult and consumes a lot of time, so it's easy to give up and use the excuse that what you were making was supposed to be ugly, which shows in the final result and I find it disappointing.
This ironic ugliness also doesn't have nearly as much comedic merit as you might think.
