Links - Back in my day, every website had to have a links page. Because search engines kind of sucked and this was the best way to discover new sites. You could also judge a person based on their links. As you can tell from the pages I link to, I'm very, very cool. |
Tilde.club-(Featured link!)
A small online community that lets people(like me!) have a website at no cost. It all runs on a single Unix server and is completely funded and operated by volunteers. Want your own space on the 'net? Tilde.club might be the perfect place for it.

Anime Web Turnpike
A partial restoration of the Anime Web Turnpike. Not all the sites are archived, in fact only the ones that were hosted on Tripod are here, but that still comes out to several hundred ancient anime fan pages. Revel in their beauty.

Protoweb
A project to restore vintage websites and FTP servers and make them accessible via their original URLs. For example, with Protoweb you can visit happypuppy.com in your web browser and it'll take you to Happy Puppy circa 1996. This requires using a proxy server so some setup is needed, but the payoff is feeling like you're really back in time. Quick instructions: set your HTTP/FTP proxy to wayback.protoweb.org port 7851 and go to inode.com. Worth it.

The Brunching Shuttlecocks
An early comedy site that ran from 1997 to 2003 and produced a ridiculous amount of content, a lot of which involved rating things, like danger symbols. Also included movie reviews. Notable for being pretty funny. People don't make internet humor like this anymore. Well, I assume they don't. I'm too lazy to check.

The Gaming Intelligence Agency
The greatest gaming website ever made in my opinion. It served up news, previews, reviews, and various features. But the main attraction was the sweet, sweet letters column. It was fairly normal in the beginning but eventually an entire community sprang up around writing silly, angry, and just plain weird letters to the beleaguered editors. Now it serves as a priceless time capsule of videogame-obsessed internet culture from 1998 to 2002.

A search engine that mainly indexes websites from the 90's and early 2000's, but they accept modern retro-style sites like Crunchy Slug, too. It's an internet nostalgia maniac's dream come true. You can also submit sites to help them grow. Go. Now.
